Air vents not working right in a ford focus 03?

when I turn the knob to change the focus of my heat and air vents, nothing changes. it just keeps blowing out of the main vents. This wouldnt be a huge problem, except i cant switch it to defrost mode, and with winter coming soon, this is definetly a problem. Has anyone else had this problem and know how to fix it?
