Why can't ions diffuse through a plasma membrane?

If the tails are hydrophobic then that means they do not like to be around molecules that are polarized or have a charge. Ions have a charge. So if you want to send ions across a cell membrane, you need to use transport proteins because the Hydrophobic tails on the inside of the membrane will not allow the ions to p through.
