How does ammonium chloride containing cough syrup affects gastric pH and kidney buffers?

Is it true that ammonium chloride (freely available in most cough formulas) causes buffer loss in kidneys and so that pH imbalances by electrolyte loss? are those formulas advisable for kidney patients and also to bronchitis patients?
